Field assessments in earthquake-affected communities in Myanmar revealed a harsh reality: young people have faced prolonged educational disruption since COVID-19, compounded by the 2021 coup, political repression, economic collapse, and recurring natural disasters. The current education system functions like a factory—reducing human potential to test scores, tuition fees, and institutional approval—while devaluing creativity, vocational skills, and community knowledge. As stateless and marginalized youths face exclusion from schooling, shrinking opportunities, and the looming threat of conscription, KAWI emerged as a response: to reimagine education as diverse, alive, and centered on human dignity.
Centering decolonized knowledge, heritage, creativity, and critical dialogue.
Sharing power through student–staff partnerships that make youth co-creators of their education.
Nurturing moral imagination to envision just futures and reimagine systems beyond oppression.
Redefining success so young people can cherish their lives and pursue meaningful purpose
Living with Love and Awareness: reclaiming joy, creativity, and humanity while confronting reality.
No Saviorism: youth lead their own struggles for liberation.
No Hierarchy of Knowledge: valuing and redistributing diverse ways of knowing.
